Fake News: Photos & Videos

Yes, they exist! Fake photos (or Fauxtography) are essentially altered images where the aim is to purposely deceive. Photos can be altered on many levels from minor touch ups, complete removal or replacement of images to digital enhancements.

Since photos have a profound impact on the way we view the world, it is important to be able to identify whether a photo could be fake.

Try to examine the following aspects of the photo:

  • Reflections
  • Shadows
  • Point of light
  • Image quality
  • Skyline
  • What are people doing or wearing in the photo

Ask yourself:

  • Have I seen this photo before?
  • Is the photo too good to be true?
