Ontario Courts

The Court of Appeal of Ontario hears civil and criminal appeals and motions from Ontario's two trial courts - Superior Court of Justice and Ontario Court of Justice. Civil matters heard by this court are broad and covers disputes that may arise between persons in this jurisdiction.

The Superior Court of Justice has inherent jurisdiction over criminal, civil and family cases. It also has authority over matters granted to it by federal and provincial statutes.

The Divisional Court is a branch of the Superior Court of Justice. It hears statutory appeals from administrative tribunals in Ontario. It also has some jurisdiction over civil and family appeals.

The Ontario Court of Justice is one of the trial courts. It has jurisdiction over family law cases (child protection, custody, access, support and adoption) and criminal charges laid within the province.

The Small Claims Court is a branch of the Superior Court of Justice. It hears civil claims seeking up to $25,000 in monetary and property damages.
