Scholarly Associations & Societies

Scholars always undertake research with an eye to a wider community of readers and writers. The following is a small selection of associations and societies in classical studies that exist to help scholars connect with one another. Associations and societies of this kind typically publish a newsletter or journal and also meet annually for conferences to provide a forum for academics and graduate students to share their research in the form of scholarly presentations and papers.

Ontario Classical Association
Established in 1944, the OCA is dedicated to the promotion of Classical Studies in the province of Ontario. Members include university professors, secondary school teachers, university and secondary school students, and other persons interested in the Classics.
The Classical Association of Canada
The Classical Association of Canada was founded in 1947 as a national non-profit organization. Its official languages are English and French. It aims to advance the study of the civilizations of the Greek and Roman world, their later influence, and their creative presence in modern culture.
Association of Ancient Historians
Founded by Canadian and American scholars in 1969, the AAH is the largest organisation in North America devoted exclusively to promoting teaching and scholarship in ancient history.
Society for Classical Studies
The Society for Classical Studies (SCS), founded as the American Philological Association in 1869 by "professors, friends, and patrons of linguistic science," is the principal learned society in North America for the study of ancient Greek and Roman languages, literatures, and civilizations.
The Classical Association (UK)
Founded in 1903, the Classical Association is the largest organisation of its kind in Great Britain. It has a worldwide membership, and fosters interest in the study of the languages, literature and civilisation of ancient Greece and Rome.
