Legal Abbreviation

The Bluebook provides suggested abbreviations to be used for citing different legal sources throughout the book.

Cardiff Index to Legal Abbreviations is a tool to use when looking for the meaning of an abbreviation, or if you have an abbreviation and want to know what it stands for.

Prince's Dictionary of Legal Abbreviations provides general lists of legal abbreviations. An extensive list is available in the 9th edition.

Legal Citation

  1. The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation is the most widely used citation style for the United States. It is now in its 20th edition and is compiled by the editors of the Columbia Law Review, the Harvard Law Review, the University of Pennsylvania Law Review and the Yale Law Journal. The 19th edition is available by subscription online here. Copies of the manual are available in the Law Library - KF 245 B58 2015.
     
  2. The ALWD Citation Manual is compiled by the Association of Legal Writing Directors. It is in its 4th edition and comes with a practice book.

  3. The University of Chicago Manual of Legal Citation ("The Maroon Book") offers a simpler approach to legal citation. It is available online here.
