Scholarly Associations & Societies

Scholars always undertake research with an eye to a wider community of readers and writers. The following is a small selection of Canadian associations and societies in the humanities that exist to help scholars connect with one another. Associations and societies of this kind typically publish a newsletter or journal and also meet annually for conferences to provide a forum for academics and graduate students to share their research in the form of scholarly presentations and papers.

Association of Canadian College and University Teachers of English
Established in 1957, ACCUTE is a professional organization that represents faculty teaching English in Canadian universities and colleges, and students studying English at the graduate level.
Canadian Association for the Study of Book Culture
The CASBC/ACÉHL was founded in 2004 to establish at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences an annual opportunity for scholars working in a broad range of humanities and social science disciplines in Canadian universities to meet on the common ground of studies of book and print cultures.
Canadian Historical Association
Founded in 1922, the Canadian Historical Association/Société Historique du Canada is a bilingual scholarly organization dedicated to research in all fields of history.
Canadian Philosophical Association
The Canadian Philosophical Association was founded in 1958 to promote philosophical scholarship and education across Canada, and to represent the interests of the profession in public forums. To these ends, it organizes scholarly meetings at annual gatherings sponsored by the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, publishes a Bulletin and a quarterly journal Dialogue.
Canadian Society of Church History
Founded in 1960, the Canadian Society of Church History is a non-denominational association dedicated to promoting and encouraging research in the history of Christianity, particularly the history of Christianity in Canada.
Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Science
CSHPS/SCHPS is a Canadian forum bringing together historians, philosophers, sociologists, and a wide range of interdisciplinary scholars interested in exploring all aspects of science, past and present. Its newsletter is the Communiqué and its annual conference takes place within the Congress of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Humanities Research Centres and Institutes at York University

The following research institutes and centres exist to promote scholarly work in a variety of humanities-related fields and disciplines at York University.

Canadian Centre for German and European Studies
Allied with similar centres and institutes around the globe, the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies (CCGES) is comprised of scholars with diverse interests who aim to educate the next generation of Canadian experts on contemporary Germany and Europe, stimulate and conduct research on Germany and Europe, and promote educated social awareness of German and European issues in Canada. It functions jointly as a centre with the University of Montreal.
Centre for Feminist Research
Established in 1991, the CFR fosters collaborative research by connecting scholars working in a variety of disciplines at York and in the wider scholarly community. The CFR sponsors seminars, workshops, lectures, and also works collaboratively with community organisations.
Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean
The Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLAC) is an interdisciplinary research unit concerned with the economic development, political and social organization, and cultural contributions of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Israel and Golda Koschitzky Centre for Jewish Studies
The CJS is the first of its kind in Canada. Here researchers explore explore the texts, histories, cultures, sociologies, languages, and fine arts of the Jewish people from biblical times to the present.
Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies
The mandate of the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies is to promote and support interdisciplinary and discipline specific research pertinent to the study of Canada. Over the years the Centre has expanded to encompass a theme of "Canada in the World."
