Human Rights in Africa: Treaties

The database provides access to United Nations documents including Official Records, masthead documents, draft resolutions, meeting records, UN Sales Publications, and the UN Treaty Series citations. Access is limited to Osgoode Hall Law School, York University faculty and students only.

This Charter was adopted in June 1981 by the eighteenth Assembly of Heads of State and Government, entered into force on 21 October 1986. Its aim is to promote and recognize the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of the African people.

This Charter was adopted in July 1990 and entered into force on 29 November 1999 aims at protecting the rights and welfare of the African child.

The AU formerly Organization for African Unity is Africa’s premier institution. The organization’s website provides access to full-text of treaties, conventions, protocols, decisions, declarations and reports.

The UN Treaty Collection contains all treaties of the United Nations including those of African nations on the issues of human rights. This resource is available as a database to Osgoode Hall Law School, York University faculty and students through eResources @ Osgoode or the library catalogue.

The Protocol affirms the provisions of Article 18 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights calling for the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and ensuring the protection of the rights of women as stipulated on international declarations and conventions.
