Career Research Resources: Find Employers

This guide was created to support a Learning Commons Collaborative workshop series.

Company Web Sites

Company web sites are recommended when doing research on specific employers.

It is usually best to find the company web site using Google.

Examples of useful information on a company web site include:

  • About Us section
  • Careers section
  • Investor Relations section
This will apply where a company is publicly-traded and will give you access to the company's recent annual and quarterly reports.

Be aware the company web site is a tool a company uses to promote its services and products and to promote a good image of itself. It is always a good idea to use additional resources when researching a company you are interested in working for.

Online Library Resources for Researching Companies

Trade Journals/Publications

These publications contain articles which often feature information about individual companies.

Use the following databases to search for such publications (use the option to limit to trade publications)

Many of these publications are available online but the Bronfman Business Library at the Schulich School of Business does also have some titles in print. A list of all available current periodical subscriptions including trade/industry publications is available on request from the reference desk.

Job Search Engines

While job search engines can be useful for when doing career research, we caution you to not rely on them extensively or exclusively.
