Gender / Sexuality / Women's Studies: Advanced Research

This guide supports the curriculum and research in the School of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies at the undergraduate and graduate level. With any inter- or multidisciplinary, it is important to also consult the relevant discipline-specific guides.

Untapped Resources

Graduate students may especially need this page -- but all curious scholars are welcome to explore the world of advanced research.  It takes us out of published materials and the more conventional search strategies we have used so far.  What else is there?

Master’s or Doctoral Dissertations
If you are writing a MRP or thesis, you will also need to determine if others have covered the same ground.  A dissertations database can help you with this type of search.

Citation Searching
A different type of search – it will allow you to determine the impact of an article or book.  It will also give you access to new scholars who have used what you consider relevant to your topic.  Try it.  You might like it.

Grey Literature

Unique, unpublished sources may be required for your research.  These materials are sometimes called “grey literature” and are produced by governments, non-governmental organizations, associations or research centres.

Additional Resources and Strategies

MASTER'S THESES and DOCTORAL DISSERTATIONS
Why do you need them? For graduate students, to be certain no one has submitted similar work.  For the rest of us, cutting edge research and a rich bibliography.  To acquire a thesis that is not electronically available, you need to know local policies, procedures.  Use this link.
To browse work previously produced by your program, browse through YorkSpace, the university's institutional repository, and their holdings for Gender, Feminist and Women's Studies and Women's Studies.

CITATION SEARCHING
Use Google Scholar and / or commercial databases to determine who has cited a particular article.  This is very useful to determine the impact of an article and to find a new generation of scholars using a seminal article.
GREY LITERATURE
Reports and analysis made by organizations and groups can be extremely helpful.  Listed below are types of organizations and a few examples. There is no scientific method for finding this stuff and it must be viewed as exploration with potential for great discovery.  Happy exploring!
