Zotero : Adding Items

How to use this powerful research management and citation tool.

Adding Items to Your Zotero Library

There are a few ways to add items to your Zotero library. The usual way is through your web browser, but you can also:

  • create an item with the New Item button and enter all the information by hand
  • use identifiers and add by ISBNs, DOIs and PubMed Identifiers
  • add PDFs by hand (do this when you already have some research but now want to move it into Zotero)
  • import from other reference managers (such as EndNote and Mendeley)

Aside from items such as books, articles, and web sites, you can also add notes and annotations.

Saving Items

Zotero displays icons for different item types including:

  • undefined for articles
  • undefined for books
  • undefined for book sections (chapter, etc.)
  •  for newspaper
  •  for picture
  • video1 for video
  •  for web page with metadata

Items will be saved to Zotero in the format suggested by the icon.

If it saves incorrectly, you can change the Item Type field at the top of the right column.

Zotero's has mobile versions for iOS and Android (in beta).
