Zotero : Adding Items

Adding Items to Your Zotero Library

There are a few ways to get items into your Zotero library:

  • automatically via a web browser (requires a browser connector to be installed)
  • as single items or multiple items
  • as generic web pages (when Zotero can't translate a site's metadata, it will still save some basic information, which you can then edit)
  • using identifiers (searches by ISBNs, DOIs and PubMed Identifiers)
  • manually create new items
  • add PDFs or other files
  • add notes
  • import from other Reference Managers (EndNote, Mendeley, etc.)

Check out Zotero.org's Documentation tab and Quick Start Guide for more information on adding / collecting items.

Saving Items

Zotero displays icons for different item types including:

  • undefined for articles
  • undefined for books
  • undefined for book sections (chapter, etc.)
  •  for newspaper
  •  for picture
  • video1 for video
  •  for web page with metadata

Items will be saved to Zotero in the format suggested by the icon.

If it saves incorrectly, you can change the Item Type field at the top of the right column.

Zotero Mobile

Zotero.org's mobile version allows you to access/edit your online library from your phone/tablet.
