This guide is designed to help you consider what the Black Lives Matter (BLM) social movement is about within a Canadian context. BLM-TO and BLM-Vancouver are part of an international activist movement organizing and resisting anti-black racism and racialized state violence.
The BLM social movement began with the use of the hashtag #BlackLives Matter and a call to action by American BLM founders Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi, in 2013 after the shooting death of African-American teen Trayvon Martin.
