This guide will assist the user in researching Canadian federal statutes and will show the user how to research bills before parliament.

Process

  1. Find the short title using the Dept. of Justice Consolidated Acts website.
  2. Determine the citation: using the Dept. of Justice Consolidated Acts or the Table of Public Statutes and Responsible Ministers (it appears right beneath the Act's entry). 
  3. Find the latest online consolidation in the Dept. of Justice Consolidated Acts website.
  4. Update if needed following the instructions in the Updating Statutes section of this guide.
  5. Assemble the source material if needed using the Table of Public Statutes and Responsible Ministers and the updating tools found in the Updating Statutes section of this guide. The source material will be found in LEGISinfo (for current material), the Canada Gazette, Part III, the Dept. of Justice Annual Statutes website, HeinOnline (login required), and paper.
