Finding Statutes

A fuller explanation will be found in the Canadian Federal Statutes guide.

  1. Find the short title using the Dept. of Justice Consolidated Acts website.
  2. Determine the citation: using the Dept. of Justice Consolidated Acts or the Table of Public Statutes and Responsible Ministers (it appears right beneath the Act's entry). 
  3. Find the latest online consolidation in the Dept. of Justice Consolidated Acts website.
  4. Update following the instructions in the Updating Statutes section of the Canadian Federal Statutes guide.

Finding Regulations

A fuller explanation will be found in the Canadian Regulations guide (under construction)

  1. Find the short title (if not already known) by using the Consolidated index of Statutory Instruments. Part II lists the Regulations by enabling Statute thereby providing some form of subject access.
  2. Locate the text by using the Consolidated Regulations site maintained by the Dept. of Justice. 
  3. Note the "current to" date and update if necessary by consulting recent issues of the Canada Gazette, Part II.
