Research Impact Challenge: Day 1

This guide contains a set of challenges to help York researchers improve the discoverability of their research and scholarly outputs.

What is today’s challenge? Learn about the value of an ORCID iD and create your own to help propel the visibility of your research!

What is ORCID?

  • ORCID is an international, non-proprietary, and not-for profit organization sustained by several institutional memberships, which includes York University.
  • ORCID produces the ORCID-iD, a free, unique, 16-digit persistent identifier created for all researchers engaging in scholarly activities.
  • ORCID-iDs are used by 8.47 million researchers worldwide, and by over 100,000 Canadian researchers.

Benefits of ORCID

  • Name disambiguation: ORCID helps distinguish researchers with similar names. Researchers also maintain one persistent identifier throughout their career, even if their name changes.
  • Reduced administrative burden: Researchers can auto populate their ORCID iD automatically by connecting trusted third-party sources such as CrossRef or Scopus to their ORCID.
  • Researchers maintain full control of their profile!
