Artificial Intelligence and the Law: What is Artificial Intelligence?

AI Terminology

Artificial intelligence (AI) is defined as "a machine-based system that for explicit or implicit objectives, infers, from the input it receives, how to generate outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations, or decisions that can influence physical or virtual environments. Different AI systems vary in their levels of autonomy and adaptiveness after deployment." (OECD.AI, 2023)

We are already using AI in our everyday life. Some examples include virtual chat agents, face and speech recognition (e.g. Siri, Alexa), search engines, smart homes, etc.

Generative AI is a deep learning model that can learn from raw data to generate content (IBM, 2023)

Machine learning is a subfield of AI that involves the use of data and algorithms to emulate human learning with greater accuracy (IBM, n.d.)

Deep learning is a subfield of machine learning. It uses layers of artificial neural networks (ANNs) that simulate the human brain enabling it to learn from large amounts of data (IBM, n.d.)
