Open Access Supports for York Researchers

Open access (OA) journal publishing includes many different models! Check out the Libraries' FAQ on open access publishing to learn more. Common models include:

Open Access (OA) Publishing Model Characteristics of Model
Gold OA Publishing
  • In Gold OA publishing, the published content in the journal is freely available to read for researchers.
  • However, the author will be required to pay an article processing charge (APC) to publish in the journal.
Hybrid OA Publishing
  • In Hybrid OA publishing, the journal will have some articles that are available OA.
  • However, other articles will require researchers to have a subscription to the journal to access the content.
  • Authors publishing in Hybrid OA journals can choose to pay an APC to make their article OA upon publication.
Diamond OA Publishing
  • Journals that use a Diamond OA publishing model do not require readers to pay a subscription to access the content.
  • They also do not require authors to pay an APC to publish their articles.
  • You can find Diamond OA journals using the Directory of Open Access Journals' search.

  • YorkSpace is York's institutional open access repository for York-affiliated research outputs.
  • Engage with Green Open Access publishing by self-archiving a copy of your research in YorkSpace.
  • YorkSpace’s self-archiving guide provides you with the information you’ll need to get started.
  • Need help? Email diginit@yorku.ca for support with YorkSpace.
  • York Digital Journals (YDJ) is the Libraries' electronic journal hosting service for academic and student journals.
  • Publication criteria and submissions guidelines are established individually by the journals. To find out if your work is eligible for submission in YDJ publications, please consult each journal’s website.
  • Most YDJ publications use a Diamond Open Access publishing model. This means that authors do not have to pay article processing charges when publishing in these journals.
