Zotero for Legal Research: McGill Guide Tips

Workarounds for Proper Legal Citation

Like any technological solution, Zotero is not perfect. While Zotero is generally quite good at citing secondary sources, it can be less accurate for other source types, such as case law and legislation. Here, we provide some workarounds on citing these particular types of resources.

Note: You should always check your Zotero citations to ensure they are consistent with the latest edition of the McGill Guide. Zotero may also take some time to update between editions of the McGill Guide, so be aware that updates may not yet be available when a new edition is released.

Saving Other Items

Zotero displays icons for different item types including:

  • books
  • articles
  •  multiple items
  • PDFs
  • newspapers
  •  pictures
  • video1 videos
  •  web page
  • statutes
  •  cases

The icon displayed in your browser tells you in what format Zotero will save the item. If it saves incorrectly, you can always edit the Item Type manually in your Library.
