Zotero for Legal Research: Saving Individual or Multiple Items

Saving Individual Items

Once you have located a useful item for your research (e.g. book, journal article, newspaper article), save it to your Library by selecting the Save to Zotero icon at the top right corner of your web browser.

This icon will change depending on the resource type (see the side bar 'Saving Other Items'). Once clicked, a box will appear notifying you that your item is being saved, and it will appear in your Zotero Library. To view the saved information about your item, click on it in Zotero and check in the right side panel to ensure all of the correct fields are entered. You can update and edit this information as needed.

Saving Multiple Items from a List

When viewing multiple resources in your web browser (such as a library catalogue), the Save to Zotero icon will appear as a folder. By clicking on it, a checklist will appear of all available items that can be saved:

Select the individual items you wish to save to Zotero, or Select All to save all items to your Library. This can be a helpful step to collect and save relevant resources in one place in the initial stages of your research.

Saving Webpages

If you find a webpage you would like to use for your research, you can use the Save to Zotero icon to save a snapshot of the webpage as it currently appears to your Library. This helps you preserve the information on that page even if the website is altered or taken down at a later date. Be advised that if the webpage changes over time, updates will not be reflected in the saved item in your Zotero library.

You can access the saved webpage under the item's information in your Zotero Library:

For webpages, Zotero will typically only save the Title and URL, so you'll need to manually add any additional information (e.g. Author, Year).

Saving Other Items

Zotero displays icons for different item types including:

  • books
  • articles
  •  multiple items
  • PDFs
  • newspapers
  •  pictures
  • video1 videos
  •  web page
  • statutes
  •  cases

The icon displayed in your browser tells you in what format Zotero will save the item. If it saves incorrectly, you can always edit the Item Type manually in your Library.
