What are eBooks?

An eBook is an electronic version of a printed book. eBooks can be scholarly or popular in nature and can be read on a computer, mobile device, or eReader. This guide was created to help the students, staff, and faculty at York University access its growing collection of eBooks and to make use of the various features and functions they offer. While there are minor differences across eBook providers (e.g. number of users at a time, copyright permissions), this guide aims to help you understand these valuable resources!

Why use eBooks?

  • With remote access, eBooks are available whenever you need them; even when the library is closed!
  • Full text searching helps save you time when looking for relevant sections, passages and quotes
  • No carrying heavy books! Store multiple books easily on your personal computer, smart phone, tablet, or eReader
  • Magnification (the ability to resize text) and text-to-speech functions help with accessibility
  • eBooks automatically expire on their due date, therefore no late fees!
