"Scholars Portal Books provides access to a wide range of scholarly digital texts on a single platform. Most of our content is from academic publishers, and is available to Ontario universities that have purchased ebooks with perpetual access rights. Some collections on the platform are available to universities across Canada, some are available to Ontario colleges, and some are open access or public domain and available to all.
The collections loaded here were selected by your library to support the research and teaching mission of your university. Publishers represented on the platform include Oxford University Press, Emerald, IEEE, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and most Canadian University Presses, including University of Toronto, McGill-Queens, and Presses de l'Université du Québec."
The easiest way to read the library's growing collection of eBooks is to simply read it on your browser. Reading the book on your browser allows you to read all of its content without any restrictions to the number of pages or chapters you can view. When you download the book, certain DRM guidelines will affect what you can and can't access. If you prefer to have a version of the book downloaded, follow the steps below.
The number of pages you're allowed to download varies by publisher. When you attempt to download a chapter or portion of a book, a prompt will indicate how much you may download. For more info on usage terms, consult York's Fair Dealing Guidelines. Since Scholars Portal Books contains eBooks from many different publishers, there are a few different ways to download content, but here is a common way:
For books that allow downloads by chapter, you will also sometimes see a PDF button beside each chapter; click to download.
For books with no PDF, print or download a chapter by clicking the ‘Print’ button at the bottom-centre of the page. Use the “print to PDF” function in your web browser to download as a PDF.
Some books can be downloaded in their entirety using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), but some cannot. Access varies by publisher. To download a book you will need to download Adobe Digital Editions and sign up for an AdobeID, but this is free. Three days (72 hours) after the book is borrowed, it will disappear from your account (no more late fees!).
To download book with ADE:
2. The pop-up will tell you the length of your borrowing period and how to create an Adobe ID if you don't already have one.
3. Click "Download" and then log in with your Adobe ID when prompted.
The amount of a book that can be copied or printed depends on the publisher, but in many cases the amount is 20% of the book (i.e. if a book is 200 pages from cover-to-cover, you may print up to 40 pages).
