Mining Management: Permitting & Assessments

About Permits & Environmental Assessments in Canada

Permits allow mining companies to proceed with different stages of development. Because of the Canadian Constitution, mining activities are regulated by the provinces and territories. Therefore, provincial and territorial jurisdictions will require different types of permits from mining companies. A common type of permit is:

  • Exploration permits: Allows a company to carry out early exploration activties in specific locations and at specific times.

The federal government, provinces, and territories may also require that environmental assessments be completed:

  • Environmental assessments: This type of assessment reviews the effects that a proposed mining project can have on the environment, First Nation populations, other populations, the economy, and other social impacts the project may have.
