Social Assistance Resources: Northwest Territories

This program is designed for:
- Northerners who are 19 years of age or older
- Have a need greater than their income
- Participate in a productive choice, unless they are exempt

Eligibility:
- must be an NWT resident;
- must be a parent or primary caregiver of one or more children under the age of 18 who live with you;
- must have a family net income of less than $80,000 per year; and
- must file an income tax return every year.
You do not need to apply for the NWT Child Benefit. If you are already enrolled in the Canada Child Benefit program and meet the eligibility criteria listed above, you will automatically qualify for the NWT Child Benefit.

Eligibility:
You are automatically eligible for the SCSB if you receive the federal Old Age Security (OAS) and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), or the Federal spouse’s allowance.

Eligibility:
- Are residents of the Northwest Territories
- Are 60 years of age or older
- Own and occupy the home as his/her primary residence OR if renting, be the leasee of a self-contained unit where heating costs are not included in the rent
- Meet a household income test
- Are not receiving Income Assistance
- Apply each year

It is available to low to modest income homeowners, including seniors on fixed incomes, as defined by the Core Need Income Threshold for their community. Applicants must be 19 years of age and have lived in the NWT for three years and one continuous year in the community of application prior to approval.

Eligibility:
NWT residents who are experienced and/or new entrants into agricultural food production as well as agri-food processing business and/or involved in northern-based agri-businesses.

Eligibility:
- Be a permanent resident of the Northwest Territories (NWT)
- Have a valid NWT Health Care Card
- Indicate self-identification as Métis
- Declare you are not registered under the Indian Act (commonly referred to as ‘status Indian’) or an Inuk recognized by an Inuit land claim organization
- Provide a letter from one of the Indigenous governments or Indigenous organizations listed below confirming they are a member of one of the following Indigenous government or Indigenous organization whose members hold or asserts to hold Aboriginal rights in the Northwest Territories as affirmed by section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982:
- Dehcho First Nations as the regional government representing the Fort Providence Métis Council and Fort Simpson Métis Local #52
- Gwich’in Tribal Council
- Northwest Territory Métis Nation as the regional government representing the Fort Resolution Métis Government, Fort Smith Métis Council and Hay River Métis Government Council
- North Slave Métis Alliance
- Sahtú Secretariat Incorporated
- Tłıc̨hǫ Government

Eligibility:
- 60 years of age or over
- Non-Indigenous
- Permanent resident of the Northwest Territories (NWT)
- Have a valid NWT Health Care Card

To qualify, you must be under the care of a nurse practitioner, and have one of the specified diseases listed on the Northwest Territories Benefits document attached on this page.

Patients can now self-refer to all rehabilitation services, which means you can sign yourself up without needing a referral from a doctor or nurse practitioner. See the website for details and referral forms.

Eligibility:
Medical travel benefits extend only to individuals who do not have similar coverage through an employer- sponsored or other 3rd party insurance or benefit program. Patients faced with extraordinary health needs and/or can demonstrate undue financial hardship as a result of individuals or unique circumstances, may submit a request for coverage outside the parameters of the medical travel policy which will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Eligibility:
- Home care programs within the Health and Social Services Authorities provide respite services for caregivers of individuals whose disabilities is a result of an illness or chronic health condition.
- In-facility respite services are available in Long Term Care facilities and in the Territorial Supported Living Facility in Hay River for individuals who meet the criteria of these programs.
- This program is delivered in community by the NWT Disabilities Council to families outside of Yellowknife (Aklavik, Deline, Fort Smith & Paulatuk) who have children with special needs.
- The Yellowknife Association of Community Living provides community-based respite services for people of any age living with disabilities who are residing with their families in Yellowknife, Dettah, and N’dilo.

Eligibility:
It is available to low and modest-income homeowners, including seniors on fixed incomes. Additional funding is available to improve the accessibility of a home for people with disabilities.

Eligibility:
- Assistance levels are determined by zones, and range between 5% and 55%
of the purchase price or the Maximum Construction Cost (MCC), whichever is less.
- Applicants with moderate income (income over the NWT Housing Corporation maximum income level) may be eligible for 50% of the subsidy.

NWT services must be considered as a first option before an application for out-of- territory placement is considered. A standardized referral process is in place and administered in the five regions and two health authorities of the NWT. Specific criteria must be met to access this service.
