Geospatial Data: Digital Elevation Models, LiDAR, and Contour Data

This research guide provides information on how to access Geospatial (GIS) data at York University.

What are DEM, TIN, and LiDAR datasets?

A digital elevation model (DEM) is a digital or 3D representation of a surface, created from elevation data. Digital elevation models can be used in GIS software, such as ArcGIS. A digital terrain model (DTM) is similar, but is usually a bare earth DEM where features such as trees and buildings have been removed.
