Archival Research Tutorial: York University Records

Archival materials give you direct access to the time or event you are studying. The goal of this guide is to help you conduct research at the Clara Thomas Archives & Special Collections at York University Libraries.

Common Records Schedule

How York University employees manage our own institutional records is governed by the Common Records Schedule.

For more information about how to interpret and apply the Common Records Schedule, visit the Information and Privacy Office website.

University records

York University Archives is responsible for preserving institutional records relating history and operations of the university. This includes records of the governing, administrative, academic and student bodies of York which have archival value, e.g. regulations, policies, minutes, correspondence and reports of faculties, departments and administrative offices; and which are preserved for their legal and evidential values.

In compliance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), most university records are not available to external researchers without permission from governing bodies at the university.  Please contact archival staff ahead of time to learn about appropriate procedure to apply for access to records generated by university departments and faculties.
