Archival Research Tutorial: Archives in Toronto

Archival materials give you direct access to the time or event you are studying. The goal of this guide is to help you conduct research at the Clara Thomas Archives & Special Collections at York University Libraries.

Archival Research Tip: Footnotes are your friends

Footnotes are your friends!

While conducting preliminary research, keep a list of people, institutions, committees, governmental offices that were involved in your topic.

Remember: the way to access archival material is often through the people and organizations who generate records, not necessarily by their subject matter.

Archives and Special Collections in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is home to dozens of public and private archival institutions that could hold primary source material for your research project.  These include other university and college archives, public archives administered by municipal and provincial bodies, and private institutions run by community, religious and organizational institutions.

Below are a selected list of external links to archival institutions.

It is recommended that researchers use search portals such as ARCHEION or Archives Canada to locate institutions holding archival material related to their topic.
