This page lists data by or about the City of Toronto and/or the Toronto census metropolitan area. Other data sources throughout the Data and Statistics guide will also have information on Toronto. When you are looking for data about Toronto, the first step is to determine how you define Toronto.

  • The City of Toronto is a municipality (census subdivision as defined by Statistics Canada) that is comprised of these six former municipalities and boroughs: Old City of Toronto, City of York, Etobicoke, North York, East York and Scarborough.
  • The Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) of Toronto, is a metropolitan region comprised of neighboring municipalities around the population centre of Toronto.  The Census Metropolitan Area code for Toronto is 535.
  • The Greater Toronto area is defined by the City of Toronto, Peel Region, Durham Region, York Region, and Halton Region. It is important to note that it doesn't have any legal or political status.

Most published data sources will provide data about the CMA of Toronto or the City of Toronto. Data about the Greater Toronto Area of Toronto tends to be found in reports about the region, instead of published data sources.
