Business Citation Guide: Reproductions of Photos, Images, Graphs, Charts, & Maps

This guide provides examples for citing business resources in APA, MLA, and Chicago citation styles.

Reproductions of Images, Charts, Tables, & Graphs

Topic Information
Reproducing Images, Charts, Tables & Graphs

Reproducing happens when you copy or recreate an image, table, graph, or chart that is not your original creation. If you reproduce one of these works in your assignment:

  1. Assign each reproduction a figure or table number, in bold and left-aligned.
  2. Include a title of the figure or table in italics.
  3. Reproduce the image, table, graph, chart, etc.
  4. Create an attribution note underneath it that shows where you found it.
  5. Cite the image in your Reference List. Use the citation format of the source where the image is found. (e.g., if you find the image on a website, cite the website).

Referring to Figures and Tables in Your Assignment

  • Use the format (see Figure #) to refer to figures and tables within your paragraphs.

Placing Figures and Tables in Your Assignment

There are two options for embedding the images in your paper:

  • Option 1: Add the image, table, graph, chart, etc. within the body of your text after the figure number is first mentioned.
  • Option 2: Add the items (each on a separate page) after the Reference List.
Citing Information from Images, Charts, Tables or Graphs (Not Reproducing)

In this situation, you are only citing information and not reproducing the resource. Use the following steps:

  1. Provide an in-text citation. Use the citation format of the source where the image is found. (e.g., if you found the table on Statista, refer to the examples on the Statistics page or the Marketing / Demographic Data page).
  2. Cite the resource in your Reference List. Use the citation format of the source where the resource is found. (e.g., if you find the image on a website, cite the website).
