Type Example
Works Cited List Citation

Author's Last name, First name. Title of the Book with All Major Words Capitalized. Edition if given and is not the first edition, Publisher name, Year of publication.

 

Example:

Schulich, Seymour. Get Smarter: Life and Business Lessons for the 20-40 Year Old. Key Porter Books, 2013. 

Note: When you referencing a book that has been published by a University press, you can abbreviate the words University Press to UP. For example, New York University Press becomes New York UP.

In-Text Citation Examples

MLA follows the author-page method of in-text quote or paraphrase.

Example One:  Author's words are quoted or paraphrased

(Author's last name page number) 

Example: (Mintzberg 7)

Example Two:  Author's name is used in the text so only the page should be placed in parenthesis' after the idea or quote.

(Page number)

Example: Mintzberg's introduces the idea that... (7).

In-Text Citation with more than one source

When a single fact or paraphrased idea is attributed to more than one source, list all the sources by alpha order in the parenthetical citation, separating them with semi-colons.

(Author's last name Page number; Author's last name Page number).

Example:

(Baron 7; Mintzberg 200).

Last Name, First Name of First Author, et al. Title of Book: Subtitle if Any. Edition if given and is not first edition, Publisher Name often shortened, Year of publication. 

 

Example:

Sydsaeter, Knut, et al. Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis. 5th ed., Pearson Education, 2016.

Note: If there are three or more authors, list only the first author's name followed by et al. instead of listing all authors names. The first author is the first name listed on the work being cited, not the first name alphabetically.

Works Cited List Citation

Author's Last name, First name. "Title of Chapter." Title of Book: Subtitle if Any, edited by Editor's First Name and Last Name, Edition if given and it not first, Publisher Name often shortened, Year of publication, Page numbers of the chapter. 

 

Example:

Fiorina, Carly. "Restoring Trust: Corporate Responsibility and the CEO." Management: Inventing and Delivering its Future, edited by Thomas A. Kochan and Richard SchmalenseeMIT Press, 2003, pp. 25-36. 

Note 1: The author that is listed first is the author of the chapter.

Note 2: If there is no editor given you may leave out that part of the citation.

Corporate Author's name. Title of the Book: Subtitle if Any. Edition if given and its not the first edition, Publisher Name often shortened, Year of Publication.

 

Example:

Marketing Facts: Statistics and Trends for Marketing in Canada. Canadian Marketing Association, 2013. 

Note: When a work is published by an organization that is also its author, begin the entry with the title, skipping the author element, and list the organization only as publisher.

Author's last name, First name. Title of the Book: Subtitle if Any. Edition if given and its not the first edition, e-book ed., Publisher Name often shortened, Year of publication. 

 

Example:

Keynes, John Maynard. The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money. E-book ed., Palgrave Macmillan, 2018. 

Note: The format "e-book ed." begins with a capital letter if an edition is not specified and it follows a period.

Author's Last Name, First Name. Title of eBook: Subtitle if AnyWebsite, Sponsoring Organization if given, Year of Publication, URL.

Note: Omit http:// or https:// when citing URLs.

Example:
